5/28/08 MLB Picks

May 28, 2008

The MLB season is only about one-third of the way through, so there are plenty of opportunities to cash in on some great money line plays.  We’ll always look for the edge, throwing together a mix of valuable underdogs and under-valued favorites.  Let’s get right to the picks!

Atlanta Braves @ Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers still haven’t earned much respect from me this season, they continue to struggle both in the batter’s box and on the mound out of the bullpen.  Atlanta is once again in the hunt for the NL East title.  They almost always field a well-rounded team.  This season is no different.
Pick:  Atlanta Braves +105

Washington Nationals @ San Diego Padres
It’s not necessarily a sin to bet on road teams in Major League Baseball.  Because of the length of the season, and the slower pace of the game, home field advantage is less of a factor in baseball.  Also, the Padres have been down right horrible this season.
Pick:  Washington Nationals +115

Detroit Tigers @ LA Angels
The Angels really don’t get enough credit.  They haven’t ended up performing in the post-season, but they are proving again this season that they know how to build a team to put together bunches of wins.  This kid throwing for the Angels, Joe Saunders, is having a great year, and with their offense behind him he looks perfectly poised to pick up his 9th win of the season already.
Pick:  LA Angels -125

Free MLB Picks for 5/25/08

May 25, 2008

Sunday in Major League Baseball we take a look at three quality bets.  The schedule is packed with games, but we won’t be chasing any big favorites.  Today’s free MLB picks are all about the value!

New York Mets @ Colorado Rockies
I haven’t quite put my finger on it yet, but there’s something wrong with the entire Rockies’ roster.  The batters can’t seem to produce and the pitching staff has fallen flat all season.  The Mets haven’t wowed anyone, but John Maine is a solid hurler that can easily keep the Mets ahead in this one if they can score some runs.
Pick:  New York Mets +100

Cincinnati Reds @ San Diego Padres
The Padres have been a huge disappointment so far this season.  Their offense has been a joke and while their pitching is supposed to be their strength, it really hasn’t panned out either.  That being said, I like this match-up for the Padres in San Diego because Greg Maddux is still good enough to get the job done, particularly in the pitching-friendly environment of PETCO Park.  The Reds are as inconsistent as they come, which is why they are sitting at the bottom of the standings in the NL Central.
Pick:  San Diego Padres +125

Los Angeles Angels @ Chicago White Sox
The Angeles and the White Sox have two of the best records in the American League, and both are currently in first place in their respective Divisions.  Of the two, the Angeles have been the better team overall.  LAA always seems to put together good seasons when nobody is really paying attention to them, and that seems to be the case this year.  John Lackey was one of the best pitchers in the AL last season, and though he started the season on the DL he’s come out in his first two starts and pitched gems.
Pick:  Los Angeles Angels +100

Free MLB Pick - Friday 5/23

May 22, 2008

There may be a bundle of Major League Baseball games going on Friday, but we’ve got our eye on just one.  Friday’s play is our biggest underdog play of the week, which means you’ll risk less and get paid more if our home dog hits.  As always, we are looking at the value of the play and this match up is oozing with it.

Chicago Cubs @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Starting pitching is probably the single most important factor to consider when betting on baseball.  At the same time, it’s also the most overrated factor.  How can that be?  Well, a hot or a consistent starting pitchers warrants a bet, but only if the price is right.  You have to be a bargain shopper out there.  Don’t throw your cash out on Brandon Webb every time he takes the mound.  Not because you won’t win the majority of the time, because most of the time the risk isn’t worth the reward, especially in baseball.  I’d be much less likely to throw down 100 to win 170 than I would be to bet the 170 in order to win the 100.  The value just isn’t there and, in the long run, you’ll never come out ahead betting on big favorites in baseball.  Friday the Pirates are +155 (or better) underdogs against the Chicago Cubs and Carlos Zambrano.  The Big Z is a fireballer, no questions about that, but he’s also inconsistent and seems to break-down mentally more than some of the other big-name pitchers.  The Pirates really are not as bad as they have been in the past.  They have some significant pop in their lineup, plus they are playing at home.  The value here is on Pittsburgh.
Pick:  Pittsburgh Pirates +155

Thursday’s Free MLB Picks

May 21, 2008

There are a lot of great games going in Major League Baseball on Thursday.  We’ll take a look at our three best bets of the day including a very nice home underdog, plus one line that really jumped out and got me excited!

Milwaukee Brewers @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Yes, I’m on the Pirates again.  Why not?  They have just as good of a record as the Brewers, and they have the better starting pitcher going tonight.  Until the Brew Crew find some stability in their middle and long relief I won’t be betting on them, I’ll be betting against them.
Pick:  Pittsburgh Pirates -120

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Florida Marlins
I love a good home underdog.  I know that Arizona has looked unstoppable early on, but the Marlins have a great young team that could easily capitalize on a road-weary D-Backs squad.
Pick:  Florida Marlins +112

New York Mets -113 @ Atlanta Braves
The Mets aren’t great, but Johan Santana still is.  He’s not getting the hype he did in Minnesota, though I’m not sure why.  He still has great numbers, they just aren’t astronomically better than everyone else.  I will take him at -113 100 times out of 100, at home or on the road.  It just doesn’t matter.  Take the Mets Thursday.
Pick: New York Mets -113

Wednesday’s Free Hot MLB Picks

May 20, 2008

For Wednesday we’ll take a look at a pair of big value under dogs in Major League Baseball.  Remember that the key in betting baseball is in the quality of the bets, as well as the quality of the lines.  You can drastically improve your risk-to-profit ratio by finding and betting consistent winning underdogs.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Home dogs aren’t as strong in baseball as they are in other sports, but they are always worth a look.  I’ve been ragging on the Brewer’s bullpen all season and with good reason.  They simply can’t hold a lead.  The Brewers should also have concern for Ben Sheet’s lack of control after about the 4th inning.  The guy hasn’t pitched a full season in a long time, take it easy on him!
Pick:  Pittsburgh Pirates +115

Seattle Mariners @ Detroit Tigers
Huh?  This is an easy win for the Tigers, you say?  There’s no such thing for the Tigers this season who, despite being touted by all of the major sports networks as the offensive powerhouse to end all other discussions of offensive powerhouses in MLB history, are ten games under .500 and (at press) actually have a worse record than the Mariners.  The bats just aren’t what everyone thought they would be and the pitching has also been consistently underwhelming in Detroit.
Pick:  Seattle Mariners +130

Free MLB Picks 5/20/2008

May 20, 2008

There’s a full plate of Major League Baseball games to whet your betting appetite on Tuesday, the only questions is, who are the day’s top plays?  Look no further my good friends as Lines and Picks runs down the best baseball bets for this Tuesday.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Who would have thought that the Pirates would be equal to the Brewers in wins at this point in the season?  As Milwaukee’s bullpen woes continue you can expect us to fade them in the right situations.  This happens to be one of them.
Pick:  Pittsburgh Pirates -110

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Florida Marlins
If the D-Backs have a weakness, it would have to be on the road where they are just one game over .500.  The Marlins are probably the biggest surprise of the year.  After losing Miguel Cabrera they’ve really stepped up to the plate, so to speak, with the sensational Hanley Ramirez leading the way.
Pick:  Florida Marlins +115

Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox
Don’t look now, but the Indians are really starting to come alive.  They are still struggling a little at the plate as a team, but I’d expect that to even out as the season progresses.  Their real success will come from their pitching, however, and Tuesday’s starter, C.C. Sabathia, is starting to find his confidence.
Pick:  Cleveland Indians -120

Free Baseball Picks 5/18/08

May 18, 2008

For Sunday we’ll take a look at two high-value MLB bets.

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Chicago Cubs
OK, so the Cubs are hot, I get it, but I don’t get the Pirates as +150 underdogs against Jason Marquis.  This is still baseball.  Anything can happen.  I’ll take the nice beefy underdog.  Ketchup only, please.
Pick:  Pittsburgh Pirates +150

Toronto Blue Jays @ Philadelphia Phillies
Shaun Marcum is one of the best young pitchers in baseball (seriously, check the stats), but he doesn’t seem to be getting any love from odds makers.  It’s true that the Phillies have some very dangerous bats in their line up, but I’m on board with Marcum and the Jays Sunday.
Pick:  Toronto Blue Jays +100

Free MLB Picks - 5/17/2008

May 17, 2008

Interleague action is in full effect and there are some pretty sweet rivalry games going today.  Here are Saturday’s top picks in bases:

Tampa Bay Rays @ St. Louis Cardinals
Both teams are flying a little bit under the radar this season, but both are playing some really good baseball.  STL gets the edge in the pitching match-up (just barely), but it’s enough to give them the nod.
Pick:  St. Louis Cardinals -125

New York Mets @ New York Yankees
This is a makeup game from last night’s rain-out.  I’m still perplexed at how Johan Santana can be facing a bad Yankees team and he’s only favored by -130 on the money line.  The Mets have had their struggles as well, but I’d bet just about any game where Santana is less than a -160 favorite.
Pick:  New York Mets -130

Cleveland Indians @ Cincinnati Reds
The Indians are really hitting their stride.  Their winning ways should continue with Carmona on the mound Saturday.
Pick:  Cleveland Indians +105

Houston Astros @ Texas Rangers
The Rangers are awful.  Just awful.  Astros’ hurler, Roy Oswalt is too good of a talent to continue his struggles much longer.  This could be the turning point for his season.
Pick:  Houston Astros -110

Free MLB Picks - 5/16/08

May 16, 2008

Here’s a look at what I see as the best bets in baseball for Friday.  Lots of soft lines, let’s jump on the books this weekend!  Cubs/Pirates gets us started!

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Chicago Cubs
The Cubs are hitting like mad and have no business being only -135 against Pitt.  Anything can happen in baseball, but this is a bargain.
Pick:  Chicago Cubs -135

Toronton Blue Jays @ Philadelphia Phillies
Is it just me or does the American League usually clean up in inter-league play.  I don’t have the numbers on-hand to back that up, but I’m pretty sure it’s true.  I love what Jays have done with their pitching staff this season.  It’s one of the best in baseball and I’ll always take good pitching over good hitting.
Pick:  Toronto Blue Jays +115

New York Mets @ New York Yankees
The Subway Series!  Or whatever.  The Yanks are slumping and Johan Santana is pitching for the Mets.  -130?  You have to be kidding.  METS METS METS!
Pick:  New York Mets -130

San Diego Padres @ Seattle Mariners
I’m actually cheering against the Padres because I don’t have Padres’ starting pitcher, Chris Young, on my fantasy baseball team, but he’s really good and the Mariners suck something awful this year.  I’ll take the Daddies.
Pick:  San Diego Padres -110

Expect a lot of bargain numbers during interleague play this season as odds makers don’t seem to know exactly how to set their lines.  Plenty more free MLB picks to come in the upcoming weeks!
